1. The window manager OpenBox

Starbuntu uses OpenBox as window manager. It stands out due to its velocity, its simplicity, its user friendliness and its enormous stability. Its windows can be designed through so-called themes for the individual taste.

The configuration files of OpenBox are located locally in ~/.config/openbox and globally in /etc/xdg/openbox:

OpenBox doesn't provide an own panel. For this reason Starbuntu uses the panel Tint2 which contains also an appropriate standalone appmenu written for Starbuntu. With the exception of the window-specific hotkeys of OpenBox all the hotkeys of Starbuntu are executed by the program xbindkeys and administrated by the own application xbindings.

Since OpenBox doesn't offer to place or to tile windows the Starbuntu programs center-windows and orient-act-win have been developed. The program center-windows gets automatically launched as a daemon at the begin of a session and centers any opening window. The program orient-act-win enables to place a window in the center of the screen, in the middle of an edge or in a corner and supports also the tiling of windows. A further more complex Starbuntu program for placing windows is place-active-window. Details for this program can be found here.

The manual of OpenBox can be displayed in the terminal through the command man openbox or called here. On the Internet you can find detailed informations for OpenBox on the web page http://openbox.org/.
